When millions of people believed the Earth was flat, was that based on personal experience?

It couldn't possibly be from experience, because we now know that it is indeed round. Probably from everyone looking out at the horizon and it appears to be flat. But it is not possible that someone learned this from actually experiencing it is flat by falling off the edge.
