The animals throat has to be cut. That way is the most humane way. Those are the two things that I know that make food halaal. Many Muslims in the West say "Bismillah" over meat that they are unsure of the source of and it makes it halaal, but there is a lot of disagreement over the practice and hadith that it comes from.
