If I leave a Rottweiler's tail undocked, will this benefit him in the long run?

I want to see what people think about the undocking of the tail. I have an inclination to leave the tail. I've had a dog with a long tail and he was active; never has he hurt his tail. I don't want to enter my rottie in a contest, and it's primarily as a companion for my mother.
